Who Are the “Missing Middle”?
Our community is facing a growing housing gap that leaves behind a vital group of people: the Missing Middle.
These are households that earn too much to qualify for government-subsidized housing programs, but not nearly enough to afford homes at today’s skyrocketing market prices. The Missing Middle workers include essential members of our workforce who keep our community running smoothly.

The Missing Middle represents the backbone of our community. People who keep our towns running, care for our families, and support local businesses. Yet many are being forced to commute long distances, live in unstable or inadequate housing, or leave the Midcoast altogether because they simply can’t find an affordable, stable place to live.
Closing this gap means creating attainable housing options so that the people who contribute so much to our region can also afford to call it home.

Why Attainable Housing for the Missing Middle Matters
Attainable housing for the “missing middle” strengthens the entire community.
These are the teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, tradespeople, and service employees who form the backbone of local life. Yet many are priced out of the very towns they serve. When these workers can live near their jobs, schools retain staff, hospitals keep nurses, businesses stay open, and towns remain vibrant year-round.
By creating attainable homes for the missing middle, we’re investing in stability, ensuring that Midcoast Maine remains a place where people can both work and live, building stronger families, a stronger workforce, and a more vibrant, sustainable community.
